Summary: Louise is a single mom, a secretary, stuck in a modern-day rut. On a rare night out, she meets a man in a bar and sparks fly. Though he leaves after they kiss, she’s thrilled she finally connected with someone.

When Louise arrives at work on Monday, she meets her new boss, David. The man from the bar. The very married man from the bar…who says the kiss was a terrible mistake but who still can’t keep his eyes off Louise.

And then Louise bumps into Adele, who’s new to town and in need of a friend, but she also just happens to be married to David. David and Adele look like the picture-perfect husband and wife, but then why is David so controlling, and why is Adele so scared of him?

As Louise is drawn into David and Adele’s orbit, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong, but Louise can’t guess how wrong―and how far a person might go to protect their marriage’s secrets.

I’m torn between starting this review with “A clever and captivating Hitchcockian thriller with a brilliant twist” and “OMG THIS BOOK! THAT ENDING! MY BRAIN!” The first is perhaps more coherent, but it’s the second that is a more accurate portrayal of my feelings.

I tend to avoid summaries these days because they can be way too revealing – but after finishing the book, I took a peek; and I love that the synopsis of this book doesn’t spoil in the least. It doesn’t give a single thing away… so neither will I.

That makes it a hard book to review. So what I will share is my reading experience. When this book arrived in the mail, it had a lot of #WTFthatending hashtags and blurbs about the ending. Now, I had already started another book, and I try to be a one-book-at-a-time gal… but my eyes… my wandering eyes. They kept looking at the Behind Her Eyes cover. There was just something so intriguing about it. What happens at the end? I tried to put it out of my mind. But what could that ending be? I was enjoying my current book, and it wasn’t time to start this new arrival. Could the ending be that shocking? I have a schedule and it must be adhered to. Do I need to put the book in the freezer? I can do this. I’m a strong, independent… Is it scary? Astonishing? Open-ended? Was it all a dream? I moved the book to the other side of the room. But like a magnet… Behind Her Eyes kept pulling my attention towards it. WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF THIS BOOK? For the love of all that is holy, I HAD TO KNOW. Am I always so easily swayed? No. Can a simple tagline/hashtag tease me into submission? Of course not. Am I the kind of person who has been known to unwrap a Christmas present when no one is looking and wrap it back so no one knows? Yep. So, schedule schmedule. I picked it up. And I did not put it back down. I couldn’t. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride that author Sarah Pinborough took me on. I didn’t trust any of the characters, couldn’t decide who was craziest, and needed to know where this story was going. I genuinely enjoyed every bit of this book. And that ending? Loved it. Did I guess it? Maybe a little. But it was more of a hope because I didn’t know if the author would really go there. But boy, did she ever, and in a better way than my not-nearly-as-vivid imagination had played it out. I would love for everyone to read this book, but I’m not sure every reader will get it. You have to have an open mind and be receptive to a very imaginative and creative concept. That is absolutely all I’m going to say. If you love suspense and unreliable characters, if you have a penchant for psychological phenomenon, if you have a fervency to uncover secrets and connect the dots – then this is your cup of tea. It certainly was mine.

Huge thank-you to Flatiron books for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
