Summary: Elena Martinez has hidden her eidetic memory all her life--or so she thinks. When powerful tech giant Aether Corporation selects her for a top-secret project, she can't say no. All she has to do is participate in a trip to the future to bring back data, and she'll be set for life.

Elena joins a team of four other teens with special skills, including Adam, a science prodigy with his own reason for being there. But when the time travelers arrive in the future, something goes wrong and they break the only rule they were given: do not look into their own fates.

Now they have twenty-four hours to get back to the present and find a way to stop a seemingly inevitable future from unfolding. With time running out and deadly secrets uncovered, Elena must use her eidetic memory, street smarts, and a growing trust in Adam to save her new friends and herself.

Mckenzie: Elena Martinez is sure her future isn’t going to amount to much.  As a foster kid with no money and no job, she knows she can’t go to college; and she most likely will have to move out of her foster home and onto the streets when she turns 18 in two months. Just when she’s ready to give up hope, however, a corporation called Aether offers her a chance to take part in a “project.” If it weren’t for the money promised in exchange for her cooperation, Elena probably never would have given it much thought. But considering it might be her only option, she agrees. Turns out Aether’s “project” is sending a group of teenagers into the future to collect information on what life is like. And as she soon sees for herself, Elena’s future is far from anything she’d thought it would be.

I really enjoyed Future Shock; actually, that’s a bit of an understatement. I loved this book. Loved it so much that once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it back down. I read Future Shock in less than a day, which made it feel like I was living the story and running out of time right along with the characters. Speaking of the characters, I adored our group of teenagers. Albeit some more than others, but they all found a place in my heart and I loved the relationships that formed among them in the midst of all the chaos, shaky as they were in the beginning. The author’s writing was extremely captivating, and the plot moved at such an exciting pace. I also enjoyed that, although this is the first book in a series, there were no cliffhangers or questions left unanswered at the end; and I’m incredibly excited to see what transpires in the second book, Future Threat, which fortunately comes out in September of this year :-)

Michele: Time travel and a group mostly composed of down-on-their-luck foster kids – including one heroine with an eidetic memory – make this a great addition to YA science fiction and one that my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed.  I have to say, my favorite thing about this book was that Mckenzie could not put it down.  Even though I knew she would be dragging the next day, I didn’t argue when she said, “I CANNOT GO TO SLEEP UNTIL I KNOW HOW THIS ENDS”; that is something this reading mom is very familiar with, and I loved seeing her so engrossed in this book.  I also loved the suspense that the time travel held and the worry over the characters as they traveled into the future.  It was obvious there was a lot of deceit going on, and it’s always fun to figure out just who is doing the deceiving.  I love the way each chapter indicates how much time these characters have left as they race to solve a mystery and get back to their own time.  It added such an element of anticipation and a nice dose of anxiety that really drew me in.  I believe teens will become easily absorbed in this tale, and I look forward to buddy-reading more Elizabeth Briggs in the “future” ;)

We received a copy of this book in exchange for our honest reviews.
