Spoiler-Free Series Mini-Reviews: The Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkin

“The two of us snuggled like quotation marks in his room full of words.”

Mara awakes in a hospital with no memory of what landed her there.  As her memories unfold, the reader is led around corners, through mazes, and down dark narrow passages wondering what is truth and what is fiction.  You will hurt your brain trying to guess all the twists and turns in this first installment.  Compelling writing, vivid imagery, and intriguing characters that make you suspicious of absolutely everyone, including the animals!  I couldn’t help but hurt for poor Mara even if I couldn’t decide if she was innocent victim or delusional patient. I'm happy to say this book lived up to all the hype, and I found it mind-bendingly wonderful!

“Thinking something does not make it true. Wanting something does not make it real.”

"I'll walk forever with stories inside me that the people I love the most can never hear."

I have this figured out. I know exactly what is going on! Hello, rug… wait… where are you going? Why are you being pulled out from under me?? And then I’m back to square one. I LOVE IT! It’s dark, twisty, and absolutely fascinating. This was my favorite book in the series. I loved the intensity and pacing of this sequel. The ending is so heartbreaking it’s cruel, and I'm actually thankful that I was late to the reading party and could dive straight into book three.

"If I were to live a thousand years, I would belong to you for all of them.
If we were to live a thousand lives, I would want to make you mine in each one."

"The first thing I noticed when I woke up was that I was covered in blood.
The second thing I noticed was that this didn't bother me the way it should have."

Eyeballs that squelch and intestines worn on the outside rather than in give this final book a gruesome but thrilling start! I have to say I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a book while at the same time being this frustrated by it. Lots of hair-pulling moments due to my own impatience and because the characters wouldn’t listen to me. I was satisfied with the ending, and there are plenty of stunning and lyrical passages to crush on. Even with the many torturous moments, this is a nice conclusion to this darkly wonderful trilogy.

“Everyone's a little crazy. Some people just hide it better than others.”

  2. I am so happy you loved this trilogy. I just received the third on audiobook so I am doing an audiobook marathon of all three. They sound creepy and disturbing. Glad I can read all three at once.

    1. Any series can be hit or miss with readers; but the average Goodreads ratings for each of these books are quite high.
