From Goodreads:

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying experiences that others in her hometown of Salem take for granted, which is why she is determined to enjoy her first high school party with her best friend and longtime crush, Tristan. But after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class, Lily wishes she could just disappear.

Suddenly, Lily is in a different Salem—one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruelest of them all is Lillian . . . Lily's other self in this alternate universe.

What makes Lily weak at home is what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. In this confusing world, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can't hope to shoulder alone and a love she never expected.

Lily Proctor is a unique heroine in the sense that she’s an outcast. She suffers – truly suffers – from severe allergies that made me realize how lucky I am I only have to stay away from cats. This poor girl has to stay away from EVERYTHING. It has certainly kept her on the outskirts of the popular crowd that her best friend Tristan inhibits. Tristan is a great friend; but when they decide to take a chance at more, it ends with devastating results. Lily just wants to disappear. Be careful what you wish for… Lily goes from the frying pan to the INFERNO! She finds herself in an alternate world – one that mirrors her own in some ways and is a complete opposite in others. And this world already has a her in it. An evil (and fascinating) her – Lillian. Lillian has huge plans for Lily, but Lily is no cowering wallflower and strikes out on her own in the strange new world. Little does she know she’s being manipulated and guided straight into the arms of Rowan – friend and lover-turned-enemy of Lillian… who he believes Lily is. Rowan is a mechanic – which has a totally different meaning there than it does here – and most importantly, he was Lillian’s mechanic until he was cast aside. Rowan possesses the knowledge to help Lily and teach her how to be the crucible she was meant to be. While Lily’s world made her sick and powerless, this new world makes her a force to be reckoned with! Cue the angst and adventure because this wild ride has just begun!

I loved Josephine Angelini’s Starcrossed, and I couldn’t wait to see what she’d give us in Trial by Fire – this talented author did not disappoint! I was intrigued from the beginning and completely captivated when Lily’s world was turned upside down. All of the characters are very enjoyable, and I love Rowan. I have so many questions, though – especially his lack of appearance in our world. This makes me nervous! Spirit walking, Crucibles, Mechanics, the creepy Woven… I was so absorbed in this magical tale Ms. Angelini weaved that it was a jolt when I finished the book and came back to my world – which was mundane in comparison, to say the least. I want to go back! I need so much more, and the wait for book two is going to be a painful one – and I don’t even have a mechanic of my own to get me through.  Sigh.  Fantasy readers and lovers of paranormal will definitely want to grab this up!

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
