November Novellas #17: Review and Giveaway: Ethan (Brightest Kind of Darkness #0.5) by P.T. Michelle

It’s that time of year again! I absolutely adore novellas, short stories, and anthologies! They are fun and fast reads, and some are very easy on the pocketbook if not FREE. Some are essential to the series, some are great for catch-up between novels, and some… well, some will have you scratching your head wondering, “What’s the point in this?” as well as questioning the hefty price! This month, I’m going to be bringing you some novella and short story deals and steals as well as highlighting my favorites and letting you know which ones to grab up and which ones you might want to pass up. I’ll have spotlights, reviews, guest reviews, and giveaways.

Title: Ethan
(A Brightest Kind of Darkness Novella)
Author: P.T. Michelle
Published: January 11, 2013

Purchase: Amazon  |  B&N

Summary:

Ethan Harris never thought monsters and darkness would consume his daily thoughts, but every night the same visions repeat in his dreams. He’s careful to project a semblance of normalcy, keeping the suffocating darkness locked inside. As much as he wishes he could focus on girls, sports, and cars like other seventeen-year-olds; nothing distracts him from his own demons or shines through.

Until Nara Collins crosses his path. The blonde fascinates and intrigues him, giving him a measure of peace he’s never felt before.

When Ethan discovers there’s more to Nara than she allows others to see, that she might have a unique secret of her own, suddenly his world comes into focus.

"I want to be a normal seventeen-year-old, who focuses on sports
and girls and where I'm going to college.  But I'd settle for
never hearing another taunting voice or seeing another dark,
horrifying image in my mind or my dreams ever again."

This was such an intriguing prequel novella!  For fans of the series, it is an eye-opening and in-depth look at Ethan Harris; but not being familiar with the Brightest Kind of Darkness series, it pulled me in and guaranteed a top spot on my TBR list.  Ethan's life is a lonely one, and I couldn't help feeling melancholy as the discovery into his darkest secrets took place. His understanding of animals was my favorite part of this novella, and I can't wait to explore that further in the series. I love that the ending held a lot of promise for happier times ahead once he crossed paths with Nara Collins.  In meeting Nara, Ethan realizes that he isn't the only one with secrets and relishes in the possibility of finding a friend and confidant.  I am so curious to know exactly what the voices and his dreams mean.  If you haven't yet read Brightest Kind of Darkness, this is a great start to the series; and if you have read it, then this is an excellent addition with some interesting background information.

"How do you stop thinking about someone when
their very presence makes you a better person?"

 My Rating: ★★★★

Bottom Line:  At $.99, this is a pretty good deal for an estimated 65 pages.  A fast read that will raise a lot of questions and definitely get you invested in book one, Brightest Kind of Darkness, which just so happens to be FREE at Amazon and B&N.
