When I stumbled across the cover of Leave Me Breathless, I knew I was buying it regardless of the fact that it was not the first book in the series and I had not read the two before it. I took one look at the man on the cover and my only coherent thought was:
And I am so happy with my impulse purchase! I fell absolutely in
lust love with Ghost,
aka Seth Warren. The first few pages of
the story, I struggled a bit to catch up, not being quite sure of what was
going on with this group of friends; however, the author did a good job filling
me in enough to enjoy the current story while convincing me to buy the others, specifically to find out what Candace and Brian’s story is. The guys run a tattoo parlor and are very talented
at what they do. The girls grew up in
families where money was never a problem, and the story definitely has the feel
of forbidden love.
Back to my favorite character: Seth Warren. Let’s look at the cover again. Do you see that big ol’ bald head? Those muscles? Those tattoos? And… there are piercings. PIERCINGS, y’all! In places. *swoon* But here’s the best part: Seth is so much more than his uber sexy appearance. He is such a great guy. He’s polite, sweet, and hilarious; and he loves his grandmother. That’s right – this big, tough guy absolutely loves his nana. *sigh* Okay, sorry. Throw in serious family issues and an ex-girlfriend who is ten bags of crazy, and Seth’s story is hypnotic.
Macy Rodgers is one intriguing lady. She suffered through a traumatic event that cost her something very precious, and she’s constantly battling with an inner turmoil that broke my heart. When best friends Candace and Samantha scheme to set Macy up with Seth for a surprise Valentine’s night, even the two of them don’t realize just how perfect the couple could be together.
“‘Is this a good surprise, or an I-get-to-maim-you-later-surprise?’”
Secretly, Macy and Seth are thrilled to see each other again after a one night encounter that rocked them both months ago. That is something completely unbeknownst to the friends, but neither Macy nor Seth thinks anything else will ever happen between the two of them. She thinks Seth wants just one thing from her; and, while she is more than happy to give it to him, she shocks herself by realizing she wants more. Then there’s Seth, who is trying to play it cool because he believes Macy is a no-strings, no attachments kind of girl… even though he could see her having a much more permanent place in his life. Cue the angst because what follows is a bit of an emotional roller coaster.
“‘You should get to your room and try to sleep,’ she said softly.
‘Don’t think about me right now.
We’ll both step back. You’re still grieving.’
‘Without you, I’m grieving over two instead of one.’
My favorite part of this story is that Leave Me Breathless isn’t just a steamy read. It contains some truly tender and beautiful scenes. The relationship between Macy and her parents is so sweet. There is a moment between Macy and her dad that involves healing and moving on, and that part of the book had me in tears.
And when Macy confesses to her Dad who she’s been seeing and her fears over her parents accepting someone like Seth, his words to her warmed my heart:
“‘Candace’s parents are a$$holes. They’re worried about who’s good enough for their little princess. But I trust that I raised a strong enough woman to know who’s worthy of her and who isn’t. If this guy is good enough for you, and he’s the one who has you floating around on cloud nine and giving you back your spark, you can be damn sure he’s good enough for me.’
‘If I raised you to be strong, then that means I didn’t teach you to sit around and wait on life and happiness to happen to you. You go after it, Macy. And if something is standing in your way, you go through it.’”
This was an exciting, at times frustrating, heart-wrenching, and very racy read. This is definitely not for any young’ns out there. This is a mature story. If detailed sexy times make you squeamish, then this one may not be for you. If you enjoy a toe-curling, passionate read that has a great plot and extremely enjoyable characters, you definitely don’t want to miss this one. The book is aptly titled – it will definitely Leave You Breathless.
I thought about Seth long after I turned that last page. Truth time: I still think about Seth.
I can’t wait to read the other books in this fun, intoxicating series from Cherrie Lynn.
