Review and Giveaway: The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

Title: The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Author: Stephen Chbosky
Publisher: MTV Books/Pocket Books
Published: February 1, 1999
Purchase:  Amazon Barnes & Noble

My Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Charlie is a freshman. And while he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it.

Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mix-tapes, family dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite.

But Charlie can't stay on the sideline forever. Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.

“He's a wallflower. You see things.
You keep quiet about them.
 And you understand.”

Every once in a while, we’re lucky enough to come across a book that seems to make time stand still and the rest of the world disappear. That’s what kind of book The Perks of Being a Wallflower was for me. No new fictional boyfriends or swoony, macho heroes in this tale. Just an engrossing and completely absorbing story told in letters by a fascinating character who quickly became a favorite. Charlie is the kind of boy that makes me want to crawl into the pages just to hug -- make him a sandwich, ruffle his hair, tell him to hang in there, and hug him some more. He touched my heart in so many ways. He made me laugh and he made me cry. But he also made me think. His insight and the way he phrased certain things had me going back and re-reading lines several times, soaking it in, and remembering a time in my life when I could relate. His love of books endeared him to me even more, and he captured my feelings for them perfectly:

“It is now my favorite book of all time, but then again,
I always think that until I read another book.”

***********

"I am starting to see a real trend in the kind of books Bill gives me to read.  And just like the tape of songs, it is amazing to hold each of them in the palm of my hand.  They are all my favorites.  All of them."

***********

“It's strange because sometimes, I read a book,

and I think I am the people in the book.”

Charlie’s relationship with his siblings was strained, especially with his sister:

"'I hate you.'  My sister said it different than she said it to my dad.  She meant it with me.  She really did.
'I love you,' was all I could say in return.
'You're a freak, you know that?  You've always been a freak. Everyone says so. They always have.'
'I'm trying not to be.'
Then, I turned around and walked to my room and I closed my door and put my head under my pillow and let the quiet put things where they are supposed to be."

But I most enjoyed the growth the family experienced and the bond Charlie had with his mother:

“I love my mom so much. I don’t care if that’s corny to say. I think on my next birthday, I’m going to buy her a present. I think that should be the tradition. The kid gets gifts from everybody, and he buys one present for his mom since she was there, too. I think that would be nice.”

Charlie’s pearls of wisdom and the way he viewed the world and those around him make Charlie an unforgettable character.

“I would give someone a record so they could love the record,
not so they would always know that I gave it to them.”

A beautiful coming-of-age book that inspires and gives us a character and his story that I will remember for the rest of my life.

“We accept the love we think we deserve.”

Thank you to my beautiful daughter for always knowing what books I need for my bookshelf even better than I do and for always picking me up a book ‘happy’ whenever you go shopping. Thank you for putting this book into my hands and knowing I’ll never watch a movie before I’ve read the book. I can’t wait until you’re old enough to read this one
;) I love you more than life.

Giveaway:

After reading the book, I was prepared to see the movie; and as far as book-to-movie adaptations go... well, none are perfect. I was saddened by some of the things that were left out of the movie, but I understand that some things just can’t translate to film. Logan Lerman was a perfect Charlie, and I was pleased with the outcome.

I’m giving away a paperback copy of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the newly released DVD, and some swag (t-shirt, keychain, soundtrack). Just fill out the Rafflecopter form for your chance to win.

  4. I really need to try reading this one. I started the audiobook last summer when we were driving to Idaho, and I just could not get into the audio the narrator was all wrong, it was an older man and he just did not work for me. I think the other issue I had was that I just finished Maggie Steifvater's Linger and my head was still all wrapped up in that story, so I had to drop this and dive into Forever. Lovely review as always and the paragraph about Katertot made me all teary eyed. Hugs friend.

    1. Awwww, thank you, Heidi! She makes me teary-eyed every time she brings a new book home for me. She's such a sweetheart.
I hope you'll give it a read! Audios can just ruin a great book! Why in the world did they screw up the narration like that? I can understand that about Linger - I loved that series! So glad you're willing to give this one another chance. Hugs to you, my friend! <3

Those quotes are perfect and I'm certain Charlie is a character I'll be able to invest in. Beautiful review as always, Michele!

  6. What a lovely review! I haven't read the book, but did see the film and loved it! I'll be reading the book just so I can see what didn't make it to on-screen. I think one reason why the film worked well enough is the author also wrote the screenplay.
