The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Having read Obsidian, I thought I was prepared for the conclusion of Shadows. But even knowing ahead of time how the story ends didn’t make it any less heartbreaking. I never expected to fall in love with Dawson and Bethany as much as I did. Dawson was so much easier to love than his brother, Daemon (*ducks for cover* - sorry, Daemon girls). He was the perfect amount of sweetness and snark. He had such a good heart without lacking some of my favorite qualities in a male character: sarcastic, witty, and heavy on the handsome.

“Is this an intervention? I can’t wait to hear your letters.”

I loved reading about the sibling dynamic among the three Luxen, as well as Bethany’s family, who I found equally captivating (and whose mom reminded me so much of my own mother):

“A clean house was a happy house - her mom’s official motto.
Bethany loved to turn on the TV show Hoarders
whenever her mom was in the room.
She went apocalyptic.”

The relationship between Dawson and Bethany was so sweet and poignant.  Their flirtatous conversations, as well as their inner monologe, were strong reminders of innocent, young love.  I couldn’t help but get butterflies whenever they were together.

The ending of Shadows came way too soon; and I’m glad I still have Onyx to look forward to, though my heart will still be heavy for Dawson and Beth.

“But there was something about him.
He was a constant shadow in her thoughts.”

Thank you to Christie at Christie's Book Reviews  for gifting a copy of Shadows to me for my birthday. Love ya girl!

  1. I really need to get back to this series! I know I a missing I read Obsidian last year and I need to read this and Onyx. I like to hear that this little novella managed to stir up such emotion in you. Crap did I miss your birthday?

  3. This series is starting to grow on me, but I still haven't read the prequel, because, like you, I don't expect to like either of them all that much. I'm probably wrong, though, especially since you ended up liking them. :)

  4. Nice review! I absolutely love this series. Jennifer Armentrout is one of my favorite authors, and I adore Daemon Black, even though he can be a jerk, he is still so hot. I loved reading about Dawson and Bethany in this novella. Can't wait for Opal.

  5. Gald you enjoyed Shadows. Can't wait to see your thoughts on Onyx, that one is my favorite!!!
