I'm pushing aside the memory of my nightmare,
pushing aside thoughts of Alex,
pushing aside thoughts of Hana and my old school,
push,
push,
push,
like Raven taught me to do.
The old life is dead.
But the old Lena is dead too.
I buried her.
I left her beyond a fence,
behind a wall of smoke and flame.

Lauren Oliver delivers an electrifying follow-up to her acclaimed New York Times bestseller, Delirium. This riveting, brilliant novel crackles with the fire of fierce defiance, forbidden romance, and the sparks of a revolution about to ignite.

As soon as I finished reading Pandemonium, I posted this as my initial thoughts on Goodreads:

It’s months later, and I STILL have these feelings!!

I love Lauren Oliver and this phenomenal series. Delirium is one of my top 5 favorite books of all times, and it easily made my "books-that-made-me-cry-like-a-little-weenie-baby" list. I was so excited for Pandemonium, but also, a little nervous. How was it going to measure up to my beloved Delirium? Well, for starters, Pandemonium felt like a completely different book to me, and I was shocked to realize... that was okay. In fact, it turned out to be more than okay.  What an extremely genius place to take the story! It definitely avoided the sophomore slump with the change of pace, the introduction of new characters, and all the action, but it still retained Oliver’s beautiful, poetic writing:

“‘I’m scared.’ He barely whispers it; but I can feel his lips moving against my neck, as though the words are being spelled there.”

It’s hard to discuss this story the way I wish to for fear of spoiling anything for those who have not yet read Delirium.

I’ll just say that I highly recommend the series, and I am forever a huge fan of Ms. Oliver. As if the wait for Requiem (Delirium #3) wouldn’t be hard enough, the ending she wrote for Pandemonium will make it nearly unbearable.

“Grief is like sinking, like being buried. I am in water the tawny color of kicked-up dirt. Every breath is full of choking. There is nothing to hold on to, no sides, no way to claw myself up. There is nothing to do but let go.

Let go. Feel the weight all around you, feel the squeezing of your lungs, the slow, low pressure. Let yourself go deeper. There is nothing but bottom. There is nothing but the taste of metal, and the echoes of old things, and days that look like darkness.”

  1. I felt the exact same way when I finished Pandemonium. At first I was surprised how different it was from Delirium, but it was amazingly done and it could nto have gone any other way. If anything, I think I might have liked this more than Delirium

  2. I still feel like bursting into tears whenever I see this book. I love Lauren Oliver's writing, but a part of me hated what she did with this book. (I am a huge Alex fan!) The ending, although a cruel cliffhanger, does give me hope for the next book though. Amazing review! :)
