Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Title:   Unearthly
Author:  Cynthia Hand
Publisher:  Harper Teen
Publication Date:  January 4, 2011

My Rating:  ❀❀❀❀❀

From Goodreads:

In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees . . . .
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do.

Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy. Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side. As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

                                                     My Review

I enjoy a great angel book; however, I have to admit I’m not usually as blown away by them as some of my bookish friends. I’m more of a zombie, post-apocalyptic kind of girl. Last year, everywhere I looked, people were commenting on Cynthia Hand’s Unearthly and giving it rave reviews. Well, I can’t let the masses know something I don’t, so I added it to my ever-growing to-be-read pile and   this became hands-down my most favorite angel book ever. I loved the story, the characters, and the author’s easy, flowing writing style. I am officially joining the bandwagon and will be reading Hallowed next.

Cheers to a non-annoying, non-whiny female lead character that you actually want to be fictional friends with.

“Because if it's not her fault, it's God's, and I'm not ready to be pissed at the Almighty.”

I loved Clara, and the fact that she had a purpose was so much more intriguing than just hot-angel-seeks-non-angel-for-forbidden-romance-and-flights-of-fancy-in-the-sky. This story had tremendous depth in addition to being an incredible and heartfelt love story.

“So I'm in love. That crazy, forget to eat, float around in a daze, talk on the phone all night and bounce out of bed every morning hoping to see him kind of love.”

“He grins. Unbelievable how gorgeous he is. And that he's mine. He loves me and I love him and how rare and beautiful is that?”

Oh, and there’s not just one handsome, charming boy... but two. And the way it was done: amazing. I didn’t even consider it a love triangle. I was surprised by the fact that I liked both boys. Usually, there is a clear frontrunner for me, but they were both so captivating. Okay, maybe I liked one just a wee bit more than the other:

“‘Tucker,’ I say, ‘I'm so glad you're still here.’
I throw myself into his arms. He hugs me tightly.
‘I couldn't leave,’ he says.
‘I know.’
‘I mean, literally. I don't have a ride.’”

“‘Did you exchange gifts?’
‘Not yet.’ He turns toward me. ‘But she gave me the perfect gift.’
The way he's looking at me sends butterflies into my stomach. ‘What?’

There are extremely beautiful passages in this book that prove to be quite thought-provoking:

“So often we only do what we think is expected of us, when we are capable of so much more.”

“Have you ever been to a place you're supposed to love, but all you can think about is home?”

Whether you live for angel-themed books or not, I highly recommend Unearthly.

  1. I am so glad you loved it. But I am jealous that you are reading Hallowed next!

  2. Awww! Well, I really did - now I see what all the fuss was about ;D

  3. The personalities of both christan and tucker will make you fall in love with each but choose one, just like clara. Im extremly sad that the lad i rooted for didnt end up with the girl of his dreams but i think ill be fine after i finish a LARGE tub of icecream. Forthrmore im just saying prepare yourself for laughter and tears.
